数字を含んだ英語の表現（その2）

日本語にも数字を含んだ熟語，表現がありますが，知らなくても 見れば 大体の意味は分かります。
英語にも 日本語と同じ，例えば “kill two birds with one stone” などの言い方がありますが，知らなければ 意味不明の表現が多くあります。
それらの中から いくつか紹介します。

“nine-to-five attitude/9-to-5 attitude”
     サラリーマン根性

“on all fours”
      四つんばいになって，〔歩行が〕4本足で，ぴったり一致して

“on cloud nine”
   〈話〉最高に［この上なく］幸せ［ハッピー］で、至福の状態で
      I have got a new car. I am on cloud nine.

“phony as a three-dollar bill”
   〈米〉全くのいんちきだ（確かめるまでもなく偽札。）

“put two and two together（and make four）”
    〔与えられた条件から〕正しい結論を導く，推論する。
      They put two and two together (and make four) and realized the plan was wrong.
     ＊日本なら 「１＋１＝２」？

“queer as a three-dollar bill”
    〈米俗〉まるでいんちきな、見るからに［紛れもなく・間違いなく］ホモで〔差別語〕

“six feet under”
     埋葬されて，死去して◆【語源】死体を埋めるための穴の深さが6フィートということから

“six of one and half a dozen of the other”
    〔二者・二つの物・二つの選択肢などの差が〕五十歩百歩である，似たり寄ったりである。

“six ways from Sunday”
     あらゆる方法で［手を使って］，徹底的に，とことん，あちこちに

“take five”
     5分間休憩する，仕事をひと休みする

“ten-four/10-4”
   〈米俗〉オーケー，承知，了解◆【語源】citizen's band（CB無線）のコードから
     "Do you copy [read me]?"  "Ten-four [10-4]."

“ten to one”
   〈話〉9割［90％］の確率，十中八九
     Ten to one he doesn't get here on time and will be at least one hour late.

“three R’s”
     1.《the ～》読み書き計算［算盤］◆Reading, wRiting, aRithmeticの頭文字
     2.《the ～》削減・再利用・再生利用◆reduce, reuse, recycleの頭文字

“three-ring circus”
   〈米話〉〔複数の活動が同時に行われる〕目まぐるしい［てんやわんやの］状況
     ← 三つのリング［円形の演技場］で同時に演技が行われるサーカス

“three sheets to the wind”
    〈俗〉泥酔［酩酊］している，ひどく［かなり・グデングデンに・ベロンベロンに・へべれけに］酔っている，酒を飲み過ぎて出来上がっている。
      ← 船の帆の角度を調節するためのロープ(sheet)が緩んでいる時に風が吹くと，船が酔ったように傾くことから。

“twenty-four seven”
    1.〈話〉〔活動・営業などが〕毎日24時間・週7日ずっと，24時間年中無休で◆【語源】24 hours a day, 7 days a weekを短くしたもの。
   ２.〈話〉いつも，しょっちゅう
     ・Ever since they met, they've been together 24-7 [24/7, twenty-four seven].

“two cents’ worth”
    1.〈米話〉ほとんど価値のないもの
    2.〈米話〉〔求められていない・歓迎されない〕自分の意見［考え］
    ・I have given my two cents' worth, so they know where I stand on the issue.

“two left feet”
    きまりの悪さ，不器用さ

“up to eleven”
    〔音量・パワーなどが〕最大限度まで［を超えて］◆【参考】go to eleven

“whole nine yards”
    《the ～》何もかも、全て、一切合切

“401（ｋ）”
     〈米〉企業年金制度◆確定拠出型年金。米国の企業年金制度。
