英単語の同形同音異義語（Homonyms）

日本語には 漢字があるので「同形同音異義語」はありません（おそらく）が，英語には Spellingと発音が同じで 異なる意味を二つ（以上）持つ単語が存在し，英語では‘homonym’ です。

“Homonyms”（同形同音異義語）とは，綴りも発音も同じだが，意味が異なる単語のことである。“Homonym” という言葉は，「同じ」を意味する接頭辞 ‘homo-’ と，「名前」を意味する接尾辞 ‘-nym’ から来ている。したがって，“Homonym” とは，すべてがまったく同じように見え，聞こえても，少なくとも 2つの異なる意味を持つ単語のことである。

“homonym” の簡単な例は，‘pen’ という単語である。これは「動物の保管場所」と「筆記用具」の両方を意味する。もう 1つの例は ‘book’ で，これは「読むもの」または「予約する行為」を意味する。どちらの場合も，音と綴りは同じである； 定義が変わるだけである。さらに 30の “homonym” の例のコレクションを紹介する。

“homonyms” の中には 2つ以上の意味を持つものがあることに注意すること (たとえば，“tender” は，「敏感（sensitive）」，「噛みやすい（easily chewed）」，または「鶏肉の細切れ（chicken strips）」を意味することもある) が，単純のため，“homonyms” の下記のリストには各単語に対して 2つだけが含まれている。
